Have a look at our  step-by-step guide to get you on your way!

1. Choose your venue: Think about the type of space and facilities you’ll need, the location and how many people you expect to take part. When you have found a suitable venue, tell them the event is for charity: you’ll often get the venue for a reduced rate or even for free!

2. Set your date: Remember to give yourself plenty of time to plan your event, and bear in mind weekends are often easier for everyone. Check your date doesn’t clash with other events or family occasions.

3. Calculate your costs: Work out how much your event will cost you to run. Don’t forget hidden costs like postage, printing or insurance. Try to reduce costs by borrowing equipment or asking local businesses to donate items or cover some of your expenses. They may welcome the chance to help and will get good publicity if you include their logo on your promotional materials.

4. Set a target: Decide how much you want to raise from your activity. Make sure it’s higher than your costs to make all your efforts worthwhile. Telling people your target adds to the excitement and may encourage people to give more!

5. Ask for help: Once you have an idea of the tasks that need to be done, see if you can delegate some to colleagues, family and friends who may be able to help you. Forming a committee may be useful, so that all responsibility doesn’t fall to you.

6. Promote your activity: The more people who know about your fundraising effort, the more you are likely to raise. Tell people, put up posters and contact local media. For help with marketing contact the charity team at fundraising@cmhcharity.org.uk or call 02380 475313.

7. Equipment: Work out any equipment you might need and how you can source it, preferably free of charge or at a discounted rate. Think about the logistics of getting equipment to and from your venue.

8. Keep a checklist: Make a list of everything that needs doing, who is responsible for doing it and the timescales. Use this to make sure your planning is on track.

9. Have a contingency plan: Don’t rely on the weather! Sadly, the unpredictable British weather can disrupt the best laid plans. If you are planning an outdoor event, have a back-up plan should the weather become unpredictable.

10. Finally, have fun! Fundraising should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, so remember to enjoy it.
